A family business, building since 2001

Wallaby Homes is run by Winston Farzan, a licensed general contractor in both the US and Australia, building for 24+ years and serving Nashville since 2018. Now that detached backyard homes are by-right across most of Nashville, we design the DADU, the pool, and the backyard as one connected project, not three separate jobs.

Winston and his family live and build in the same Middle Tennessee neighborhoods we serve. We take a select number of backyard projects each year so every lot is handled right, zoning, design, budget, and timeline. When you call, you talk to the owner.

Nashville DADU & backyard home FAQ

What is a DADU, and can I build one in Nashville?
A DADU, detached accessory dwelling unit, is a second, standalone home in your backyard. As of recent Metro legislation (BL2025-1007), DADUs are now permitted by-right across most residential zoning inside Nashville's Urban Services District, so you generally no longer need a special overlay to apply. We confirm your specific lot's zoning at the free consult.
How big can my backyard home be?
Living space is capped at 700 sq ft on lots under 10,000 sq ft, or 850 sq ft on lots of 10,000 sq ft or more, and it can never exceed the size of your main house. Height limits are 10-ft eaves single-story and 17-ft two-story (roof ridge under 27 ft). The exact size your lot allows depends on its zoning and dimensions, we check that first.
What does a backyard home cost in Nashville?
Every backyard home is custom, so the investment depends on size, finishes, site conditions, and whether you add a pool or outdoor living. Can you build the backyard home and a pool at the same time?
Yes, this is exactly what sets us apart. We build the home, the pool, and the backyard as one project, with one crew and one schedule, so you're not coordinating a builder, a pool company, and a landscaper who blame each other.
Can I rent out my DADU?
Many owners build a DADU for long-term rental income or family. Note that short-term rental (Airbnb/VRBO) use is generally restricted for DADUs built under the new base-code allowance on single-family lots, we'll walk you through what your lot allows. Metro also requires one of the two homes on the lot to be owner-occupied.
Do you handle the permits?
Yes. We handle the zoning confirmation, permit, engineering, and inspections from start to finish, Metro Codes in Davidson County (including satellite cities that run their own codes, like Forest Hills, Belle Meade, and Oak Hill), and the equivalent in Williamson, Wilson, Sumner, and the surrounding counties where we also build.
How long does it take?
After design and permitting, a typical backyard home build runs a few months. We give you a real schedule up front and keep a clean, on-time site.
